What hotel guests complain about most
Cleanliness, noise, and service are the complaints that repeat across hotels, markets, and review platforms. The useful question for any operator is not what guests complain about in general, but which of these complaints actually show up in your reviews and your competitors reviews.
Cleanliness is the complaint that costs the most
Across the industry, cleanliness drives more negative reviews than any other factor. One 2026 analysis found cleanliness problems behind 69.8% of negative hotel reviews, and TrustYou data across 50,000-plus hotels shows one in four guest reviews mentions cleanliness. Odors and stained linens are especially damaging: guests who notice them routinely cut their ratings by two or more stars (RapidEye, 2026).
Noise, service, and value round out the list
After cleanliness, the same handful repeats. Noise from thin walls, hallways, and the street. Slow or unfriendly service, including check-in friction. And value, the gap between what a guest paid and what they feel they received. JD Power reports that when a guest hits any of these problems, satisfaction drops by 217 points on its 1,000-point scale, from 677 to 460 (JD Power, 2025).
Higher-end hotels feel service complaints hardest
A peer-reviewed study of 27,864 New York hotel reviews found a clear split: complaints at high-end hotels are mostly about service, while complaints at low-end hotels are mostly about facilities (Hu, Zhang, Gao and Bose, 2019, Tourism Management). If you run a premium or boutique property, the way your team treats guests at the door and the front desk may matter more than any amenity.
Know which complaints apply to your market
The list above is the industry average. Your market has its own. Reading your reviews tells you what you already know. Reading your competitors reviews tells you what guests in your market value and where the bar is set. That is the research GuestPrism does.
