How to measure guest satisfaction in a hotel
Hotels measure satisfaction on scales from a single 1-to-5 question to the industry 1,000-point index. The right method for an independent property is the one you will actually run every month. Here is what the industry measures, and what to measure instead if a survey is not realistic.
The industry benchmark: a 1,000-point index
The North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study benchmarks 104 brands across 9 segments from 44,787 guest responses, scored on a 1,000-point scale across seven dimensions: check-in and check-out, connectivity, facilities, food and beverage, guest room, staff service, and value for price paid (JD Power, 2026). Overall satisfaction reached 665 in 2026, up 13 points year over year, with value up 18 and food and beverage up 14.
The one number every operator should track
The industry scale is a benchmark, not a tool you can run yourself. The simplest self-run measurement is the recommend question: how likely are you to recommend us to a friend, on a 0 to 10 scale. Track the average monthly, and track it per stage of the journey by asking one follow-up: which part of your stay was best and which was worst. That turns one number into a diagnosis.
Why a problem is the thing to measure
Satisfaction drops are not gradual. When a guest hits any problem, satisfaction falls 217 points on the 1,000-point scale, from 677 to 460 (JD Power, 2025). Measuring satisfaction is really measuring how often problems happen and where. The 12% problem rate the industry records is the number to drive down, stage by stage.
The measurement you already have: reviews
Your reviews are a satisfaction dataset guests wrote without being asked. Reading them by stage, by theme, and against your competitors reviews gives you the same output the big indices produce for brands: which dimensions are strong, which are failing, and whether a problem is a pattern or a one-off. That is the research GuestPrism produces for independent properties.

Good to know
What is a GSS score in the hotel industry?
Guest Satisfaction Score, most famously the JD Power North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index, a 1,000-point scale measured across seven dimensions from tens of thousands of guest responses each year.
How can an independent hotel measure satisfaction without a big survey?
Track one recommend question monthly, read every review by journey stage, and benchmark against nearby competitors reviews. Reviews are the dataset you already have; a survey is the one you have to build.
