Hotel guest satisfaction survey questions, with a free template

A useful guest survey does not ask everything. It asks one or two sharp questions per stage of the stay, mapped to the dimensions the industry actually measures: check-in, room, staff, facilities, food, connectivity, and value. Below is the question set, free to copy, built on those seven dimensions (JD Power, 2025 and 2026).

Why seven dimensions and not forty questions

The industry standard measures satisfaction across seven dimensions: check-in and check-out, connectivity, facilities, food and beverage, guest room, staff service, and value for price paid (JD Power, 2025 and 2026). Longer surveys get abandoned. A short set, one or two questions per dimension, gets answered.

The question set

Start with these. Use a 1 to 5 scale, very dissatisfied to very satisfied, for questions 1 through 8, a 0 to 10 scale for question 9, and keep question 10 open.

  • Check-in: how smooth was your check-in and check-out?
  • Guest room: how satisfied were you with the cleanliness of your room?
  • Guest room: how comfortable were the bed and the room overall?
  • Staff service: how helpful and courteous was the staff during your stay?
  • Facilities: how satisfied were you with the facilities and their upkeep?
  • Connectivity: how reliable was the Wi-Fi?
  • Food and beverage: how would you rate the food and beverage, if you used it?
  • Value: how would you rate the value for the price you paid?
  • Overall: how likely are you to recommend us to a friend?
  • Open: what is one thing we could have done better?

The follow-up question that matters most

The single open-ended question, what is one thing we could have done better, is where the real signal hides. Industry data shows a problem drops satisfaction 217 points (JD Power, 2025), and the open answer is how you find the problems a scale misses. Watch cleanliness especially: it drives more negative reviews than any other factor (RapidEye, 2026).

Good to know

How many questions should a guest satisfaction survey have?

Around ten. One or two per dimension is enough to be answered and enough to spot the pattern. Anything longer gets abandoned.

What scale should I use?

A 1 to 5 scale, very dissatisfied to very satisfied, is the simplest to fill in and easy to score. Add one open-ended question for the problems the scale misses.
